2016 was a difficult year for Fort McMurray and it’s safe to say that the entire community felt the effects of the devastating wildfire. Many Canadians were compelled to help and this story starts there...
You don’t have a monkey yet? Here’s how to get one! Any individual signed up on WBVolunteers.ca is entitled to his/her own Mac the Monkey.
During re-entry in June 2016, Telus was set up at all the Welcome Centres throughout our region to assist customers and residents in re-establishing their communication services. They had stuffed monkeys and other critters at their booth and were giving them out to the children at the centres, which proved to provide great comfort during this difficult time.
FuseSocial was also set up to promote WBVolunters.ca and to assist with the community’s volunteer needs. They had a number of wonderful community members step up to assist FuseSocial in managing the volunteer information tables.
One of the volunteers, Brad, who traveled all the way from Ontario to help, took a Telus monkey home for his young son. Carter adored the monkey and leaned on it for support Tragically, the family dog, Scout, got a hold of the monkey and it was destroyed, as dogs tend to do with stuffed toys! Of course, Carter was devastated. Brad called FuseSocial to see if they could round up another monkey, After much sourcing and many, many phone calls, FuseSocial did manage to find a monkey (turns out they were a hot commodity and very few were left in the community!) When Carter received it, he named it MAC, for Fort McMurray and to honour his dad’s volunteer efforts for our community.
The Wood Buffalo Volunteer Centre hosts an exciting website that helps match dedicated volunteers with agencies and events in the community looking for volunteer support!
WBVolunteers.ca is a great place to check out what events and activities are happening in our region and how you can get involved to help!
